The Buddha’s 2,561st Birthday is Celebrated Nationwide

  • In 1999, the United Nations announced international recognition of Vesak Day which falls on the 15th of the 4th lunar month. On the evening of May 9, 2017, a grand ceremony was held in Hanoi’s Quan Su pagoda, to mark the Buddha’s 2,561st birthday.
  • Vesak is a great event for Buddhist monks and nuns and followers. It is believed that the Buddha took his first steps on pure lotus flowers so participants at the ceremony bring lotus flowers to show their respect to the Buddha.
  • Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu, head of Quan Su pagoda, chairs the procession of the Buddhist statue and relics.
  • The procession of the Buddhist statue and relics opens the week to celebrate the Buddha’s birthday.
  • Besides religious rites, the ceremony also consists of traditional cultural activities.
