General Vo Nguyen Giap – A pan-century military marcher

Ten years have passed since the article titled “General Vo Nguyen Giap – A pan-century military marcher”, written by People’s Artist Dao Trong Khanh for Vietnam Pictorial, was published on the occasion of the General’s 90th birthday in 2001. General Vo Nguyen Giap began his 100th year on August 25, 2010 at the time when the whole country is preparing for the Great Celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi. On this occasion, Vietnam Pictorial again introduces to readers the article, written by People’s Artist Dao Trong Khanh, about the eminent general of the nation, Vo Nguyen Giap.

Lotus Flowers from Hanoi

Lotus flowers, although nurtured in mud, have been cherished as a rare species of flower by the Vietnamese people. From time immemorial, they have widely grown nationwide. Hanoi also has many precious lotus varieties, especially those from the West Lake area. Some parts of lotus flowers are used as medications or to scent tea, making it a tonic drink for a healthy physical and metal life.

Situated near the banks of the To Lich River, the ancient village of Hoa Muc in Trung Hoa, Cau Giay District of Hanoi is known for many relics that are closely connected with its cultural and religious life dating back hundreds of years. Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake Turtle Expert

Associate Professor, Doctor Ha Dinh Duc is a leading researcher on a special turtle living in Hoan Kiem (Returned Sword) Lake in Hanoi. This turtle (scientific name: Rafetus swinhoei) is an old sacred animal in the cultural life of the Hanoians and the sole turtle among the five rare and precious Rafetus swinhoei still living in the world.

Swimming Coach Nguyen Kieu Oanh

Learning how to swim at a very early age, Nguyen Kieu Oanh was selected as a member of the Ho Chi Minh City swimming team when she was only 10 years old. Three years later, she became the national swimming champion. At the 2nd National Sports and Gymnastics Festival in 1990, Nguyen Kieu Oanh dominated the pool by winning 14 gold medals. The Traditional Crow's Beak Kerchief

The traditional attire of Vietnamese women in the north of the country in the old days included a four-flap dress covering a “yem” style brassier, a kerchief and a flat palm hat with fringes. As time went on and social patterns changed, the attire has evolved to suit the wearers' daily activities, but some items, including the kerchief, have been retained and help in preserving national culture.

Strange story
A man sleepless for more than 35 years

Stories about a Vietnamese man who has been sleepless for over 35 years have been widely published in the mass media. He is 65-year-old Thai Ngoc, now living in Que Trung Commune, Nong Son District in the central province of Quang Nam.
