High-tech Muskmelon Farming Raises Farmers’ Income

The application of high-tech farming in the southern province of Tay Ninh helps advance the quality and yield of muskmelon produces, thus increasing the farmers’ income.
According to Nguyen Thanh Phong, Vice Chairman of Ninh Son Farmer Association in Tay Ninh city, most of the muskmelon farms in the province are now applying state-of-the-art farming technologies, including greenhouse systems and automatic drip irrigation.

Nguyen Di Linh, a technician at Doan Viet Cuong farm said greenhouse technology is the unique technique of providing favourable conditions to the plants. Even in extreme adverse climatic conditions where plants could not grow, greenhouse technology helps to grow high-value muskmelons. Linh said greenhouse technology also helps minimise external threats such as insects and diseases.

Meanwhile, drip irrigation applied in Doan Viet Cuong farm is saving water and fertilizer by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of muskmelon plants, either onto the soil surface or directly into the root zone, through a network of valves, pipes, tubing, and emitters.

Doan Viet Cuong's Muskmelon farm is located in Ninh Binh street, Ninh Son ward, Tay Ninh city, Tay Ninh province.

The farm uses the greenhouse technology which is supported from the Research
& Development Center for High Technology Agriculture in Ho Chi Minh City.

The technology of greenhouse helps muskmelons avoid from diseases and adapt to changable climate.

With high technology, farmers can harvest 5-6 crops of muskmelons per year.

Even in extreme adverse climatic conditions where plants could not grow, greenhouse technology helps to grow high-value muskmelons.
Linh said the 400ha farm has two greenhouses with a total area of 2,000m2 with an investment of 400 million dong (17,500 US dollars) for each greenhouse.

After one year of applying high-tech farming, which meets the VietGAP (Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices) standard, Doan Viet Cuong farm has earned a profit of 200 million dong (8.700 US dollars).
