From different kinds of egg shells, Nguyen Thanh Tam, an English teacher, created over 600 unique pieces of art.
Visiting the small apartment owned by Nguyen Thanh Tam on the 4th floor of an old building in Ward 11, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, we were fascinated by a collection of hundreds of art pieces made from egg shells which are of different sizes and colours and arranged scientifically and thematically in a glass window.
Talking with us about his collection, Tam said that when he retired he opened an English class at his house. With a desire to help his students learn better, he made a set of visual teaching aids, reproducing characters, animals and objects in English books from paper, wood and soap boxes. However, these objects were not beautiful and durable so Tam continued spending a lot of time and effort to look for suitable materials.

Recalling his childhood when he made a present for a classmate, Tam tried to use egg shells to make some objects. After several failures, he successfully made a Santa Clause which fascinated his students and triggered them to study hard. Since then, Tam has created many others which are very familiar to daily life and bring about high effectiveness in teaching.
To create beautiful art works, Tam said that one of the most important steps is to select suitable egg shells which are then exposed to the sun before being adhered together into initial shapes. Lastly, he uses other materials to decorate the products, making them look like the samples. For quail egg shells, Tam bleaches them using natural acid from lemon that does not affect people’s health.

Thanks to his skillful hands, a series of characters in cartoons, famous football players and of scared animals of folk art were born. At present, Tam owns many collections of animals made from egg shells, such as cats and dragons. Recently, he completed a collection of the Sea Games 27 mascot and horses, the animal of this year.
In 2010, Tam was recognized as the man creating the most products from egg shells in Vietnam. Although he is about 60 years old, Tam is wholeheartedly devoted to making products from egg shells and he desires to bequeath his passion and technique of the art to children.
