Vietnamese kids to compete in int’l football event in Russia

Nguyen Trong Tuan and Pham Nguyen Quoc Trung, 12, are representing Vietnam at the sixth Gazprom Football for Friendship International Programme in Moscow, Russia, on June 11.

Tuan and Trung are members of U11 Song Lam Nghe An team who took the trophy from the National Children’s Football Tournament last year.

During the tournament last year, Tuan won the award for best scorer and Trung was selected in the tournament’s typical line-up.

The Vietnamese "ambassadors" will be joined by kids from some 210 countries around the world. Participants will be divided into eight teams with different names. They will compete until June 14.

Tuan was selected to play in defense in the “Three -Toed Sloth” team, while Trung will act as a young journalist, covering all local and global activities in the programme.

The young ambassadors will also participate in the Nine Values School programme, where they will be taught about the nine key values of the F4F programme, which are friendship, equality, fairness, health, peace, devotion, victory, traditions and honour. They will learn under the guidance of young coaches and famous players.

After finishing the event, the children will take part in the opening ceremony of the 2018 World Cup and the opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia on June 14.

Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to UNESCO, presented the initiative at the meeting, emphasising its overarching objective of promoting the vital role of culture in advancing sustainable development in nations, while contributing to address the world’s complex challenges to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all.
