Hue Central Hospital

Over the past 120 years of development (1894-2014), Hue Central Hospital has become one of Vietnam’s leading medical centres. It is also the country’s first medical institution to be named on the world’s heart-transplant list.
Hue Central Hospital is Vietnam’s leading medical institution in the area of heart transplants. In 2011, it successfully completed the first heart transplant and since then the patient has been living well.

The latest successful case was conducted in June 2014. The patient is 39-year-old Hoang Quoc Bien from central Quang Binh Province, who suffered from vasodilator myocardium in the final stages that threatened his life.

The surgery was performed by Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Phu, a “Labor Hero” and Director of Hue Central Hospital, with the assistance of Australian experts from St. Vincent Hospital. It is a state-level research project co-sponsored by the Ministry of Technology and Environment and Ministry of Health, and conducted successfully by Hue Central Hospital.

The success has opened a new direction of treatment with high-tech devices for patients suffering from heart and lung failure in the final stage.

Years ago, heart patients used to go abroad for treatment, but now they are provided with effective services from Hue Central Hospital.

To date, about 10,000 heart surgery cases with complicated processes for inborn heart-related diseases, and other 14,000 cases with stent placement, were performed by doctors of Hue Central Hospital. Among those patients, 12 were foreigners, of whom Ken Lord, a 69-year-old American veteran is a special case.
Ken Lord joined an American group of 20 members to do charity activities in Vietnamese localities, including Hue. He was admitted to Hue Central Hospital in suffering from a critical heartbeat and difficulty in breathing. Results of an X-ray showed that his right coronary artery was seriously injured with two points blocked at almost 99 percent. The doctors had to insert two stents through Ken’s wrist artery, which helped ease the pain. Shortly after the surgery, he was discharged from the hospital.

Besides heart transplants, the hospital has conducted kidney transplants, with a 100-percent success rate. In addition, it has also carried out in vitro fertilisation (IVF). So far, 450 babies were born using the IVF method. Complicated diagnosis and treatment of diseases are handled well at the hospital, which gives new life to many critical patients.

Now, Hue Central Hospital has many modern facilities, together with a contingent of qualified doctors and medical staff, who are capable of using state-of-the-art technology and equipment meeting international standards.

The hospital has invested nearly 1.6 trillion dong in building a complex of facilities covering an area of 65,000m2 installed with modern equipment. They include the high-tech centre, the cardiovascular centre, the pediatric centre, the Central Region’s blood transfusion centre, the training centre for eyes section, the cancer-tumour centre, and others.

The hospital’s employees include 400 post-graduate doctors, of whom 200 doctors trained in countries having advanced medical technology. Each year, there are around 450,000 patients coming for checkups at the hospital, of whom there are 95,000 in-patients and 27,000 surgery cases.

Currently, Hue Central Hospital has cooperative relations with 12 countries and territories, and 50 government and non-government organisations, in various fields.

“Hue Central Hospital has moved towards the goal of ensuring the best, safest and most effective services for the people. Everyone has the right to be treated equally and have access to the best services provided by us,” said the hospital’s Director, Prof. Bui Duc Phu.

“We will promote our training of a contingent of doctors who are qualified both professionally and ethically and continue to implement our goal of providing the best services and treatment to our patients. We will also implement some fee-reduction policies for poor patients to help them have access to high-tech treatment,” said the director.

With its notable achievements recorded over the past years, Hue Central Hospital has been awarded, for the second time, the Independence Order, First Class, by the Vietnamese Party and State, on the occasion of its 120th anniversary.

No part of the coffee bean is discarded. The by-products in the processing of the beans will be  transformed into raw materials for producing other products within the ecosystem. This is the circular economy model that Minh Tien Coffee Group is currently implementing.
