Vietnam attends ASEAN army chiefs’ meeting in Philippines

Hanoi, December 8 (VNA) –A Vietnamese delegation led by Lieut. Gen. Pham Hong Huong, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, has taken part in the 17th ASEAN Chiefs of Army Multilateral Meeting (ACAMM 17) in Manila, the Philippines, from December 4 to 8.

At the function, ASEAN army commanders expressed their concerns over nontraditional security threats, including terrorism, trans-border crime, climate change and epidemics.

To deal with these threats, they agreed to work more closely together in sharing intelligence and organising joint natural disaster rescue drills.

Consensus was also reached on a Philippine initiative to set up an ACAMM working group, with ASEAN army commanders signing a document on ACAMM protocols.

On the sidelines of the event, the Vietnamese delegationheld meetings with its Philippine, Lao, Cambodian and Brunei counterparts. These meetings reached agreements to boost defence cooperation among the sides.

Singapore will host the next ACAMM in 2017.
