Former Vietnam News Agency General Director passes away

Hanoi, October 9 (VNA) – Veteran journalist Do Phuong (Do Kim Phuong), former member of the Party Central Committee and former Vietnam News Agency General Director, passed away on October 8 at the age of 87. 

Born on November 16, 1930 in the northern city of Hai Phong, he joined the Communist Party when he was 17 and served in many positions from the central agencies to the local governments. 

During six years (1990-1996) serving as the VNA General Director, Do Phuong, together with other leaders of the agency, implemented renovation efforts to help the national news agency keep up with new demands for journalism in the time of international integration. 

He was also a deputy of the 9th National Assembly, former member of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee and former President of the Vietnam Ornamental Creatures Association. 

He was presented with the 70-year Party membership badge, the second-class Independence Order, the second-class Resistance War Order, the first-class Anti-American Resistance War Order, the “For Vietnam Press Cause” Medal and the Medal for the Cause of the Vietnam News Agency. 

The ceremony to pay last tribute to the veteran journalist will be held on October 12 from 7:30 to 9:30am at the National Funeral Home at No 5, Tran Thanh Tong street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi. 

The funeral will start from 9:30am on the same day. He will be laid to rest at the Mai Dich Cemetery in Hanoi.
