Vietnam tops regional champs for young athletes

Hanoi, March 29 (VNA) - Vietnam ranked first at the 12th Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championships which closed on March 28 in the Philippines.

Vietnamese athletes won 13 gold and seven silver medals at the two-day tournament in Ilagan city. Malaysia came in second with five golds, five silvers and six bronzes. Indonesia were third with five golds and two silvers.

On March 28, Vietnam pocketed eight titles.

Bui Thi Trang won the girls’ 400m hurdles event with a time of 63.35sec. Her teammate Le Thi Hong Han came second, followed by Bernalyn Bejoy of the hosts.

Han then had her chance to taste victory in the 400m class.

Nguyen Trung Cuong triumphed in the boys’ 1,500m event while his teammate Doan Thu Hang topped the female category.

Cuong earlier won a title in the 2,000m steeplechase. Ngo Thi Khanh Ly won the girls’ 2,000m steeplechase.

In the morning session, Nguyen Lan Anh jumped 1.71m to take the top spot at the girls’ high-jump pool.

The tournament attracted about 300 participants from eight countries in the region. Vietnam sent 17 competitors to the event.
