Vietnam bags one silver prize at Int’l Astronomy Olympiad

New Delhi, December 19 (VNA) – Vietnamese students have brought home a silver and four consolidation prizes at the 10th International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad in Bhubaneswar city in India’s Odisha State.

The five students, all from the Hanoi-Amsterdam high school in Hanoi, took part in the world’s largest contest in astronomy and astrophysics for high school students for the first time, together with more than 50 teams from all over the world.

Vietnam is home to a number of world-renowned astronomic scientists, including Tran Thanh Van and Trinh Xuan Thuan, but astronomy is still new in the country. The science has been taught in some universities.

The Vietnamese students’ strong performance at the event is expected to encourage the study of astronomy among students nationwide.
