Young chess masters to compete at Asian Championships

Eighty-two athletes will represent Vietnam at the Asian Youth Chess Championships, which will begin in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on April 1.

The young masters will take part in six categories for boys and six for girls, ranging from U8 to U18 age groups.

Five of these players are ranked among the top seeds at the tournament, which will have three events of standard, rapid and blitz.

Tran Minh Thang is No 4 in the U18 category, Nguyen Anh Khoi No 1 in U16, Nguyen Quoc Hy No 3 in U12 and Pham Viet Thien Phuoc No 2 in U8. Only Dang Le Xuan Hien is No 2 in the girls’ U8.

Competitors are due to arrive in Chiang Mai on March 31. Their coaches will take part in technical meetings and draws will be held.

Masters will start their games a day later. The championship will conclude on April 10.
