Vietnam eyes three gold medals at 2018 Asian Games

Vietnam aims to obtain at least three gold medals at the upcoming 2018 Asian Games (ASIAD 2018), said deputy head of the Vietnam Sports Administration Tran Duc Phan.

He made the statement during a ceremony held in Hanoi on June 21 to announce the nutrition sponsor for the Vietnamese delegation during the ASIAD 2018 and the 2018 Asian Para Games.

The global nutrition company Herbalife will be the sponsor for the Vietnamese delegation in accordance with its five-year cooperative plan with the Vietnam Olympic and Paralympic Committees (2017-2021).

ASIAD 2018 is an important arena for Vietnamese athletes to prove their strengths and spirit, said General Secretary of the Vietnam Olympic Committee Tran Van Manh, voicing his hope that the athletes will achieve outstanding results at the regional sport event towards the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Vietnam won a total of 58 gold, 50 silver and 60 bronze medals to stay at the third place in overall rankings of the 29th Southeast Asian Games, which took place in Malaysia in August 2017.

The ASIAD 18 will draw 15,000 athletes and coaches from 45 sport delegations competing in 40 sports, 67 disciplines and 463 events. More than 30,000 volunteers will support the event.

The Games will feature 32 Olympic sports in a bid to help athletes prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Competitions of 38 sports will be broadcast live.

The Games will take place in Jakarta and Palembang of Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, 2018. Indonesia hosted the ASIAD in 1962 and the Southeast Asian Games in 2011.
