Hanoi, December 19 (VNA) – A Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung attended an ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat on the situation of Rakhine state, Myanmar, on December 19.
The event was held in Yangon by Myanmar under the chair of the Foreign Minister of Laos, which holds currently the rotary ASEAN Chairmanship.
The Vietnamese head delegate welcomed the Myanmar government’s updating information for ASEAN member countries, which showed the respect and solidarity of the association.
He acknowledged the Myanmar government’s efforts in recent times, while hoping Myanmar overcome difficulties and resume stability soon.
He said Vietnam is ready together with other ASEAN countries to support Myanmar in an appropriate fashion and in the spirit of solidarity and basic principles of ASEAN, if requested.
Delegates were updated with information on recent complicated developments in Rakhine state by State Counsellor and Foreign Minister of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi. She highlighted the government’s efforts in restoring order and stability in the state as well as ensuring the life of local people.
Ministers and representatives from ASEAN countries expressed their deep concern over the recent developments in Rakhine state, while emphasing solidarity and affirming support for the Myanmar government’s efforts to control and stabilise the situation.
They asked Myanmar to raise specific demands for ASEAN to support when necessary.
