Unique Valentine’s Day gifts marketed in HCM City

Chocolate and strawberry bouquets are most sought by young people in Ho Chi Minh City this Valentine.

My Trinh from 60-second flower delivery shop said her shop’s orders increased 10 times with bouquets of chocolate and strawberry being the best sellers.

Flower shops in the city have marketed original products which are well responded by consumers despite their relatively high prices, ranging from 400,000 (17.3 US dollars) dong to 1.5 million dong (65 US dollars)/bouquet.

While scarlet roses cost as much as 50,000 dong (2.1 US dollars) for only one flower, five times higher than usual, boxes of heart-shaped and chocolate-covered cakes sell for 200,000 dong (8.4 US dollars) each.

Apart from flowers and chocolate, perfumes, cosmetics watches, handbags and jewelry are in high demand as well.

“Love is priceless, at least when the season of love is around the corner,” said Nguyen Thao Nhu, owner of a gift shop on Le Van Si street in District 3.

“Some exported products such as watches, handbags and jewelry are sold for millions of dong, but many people seem to ignore the high price,” Nhu said.

In jewelry shops at Ben Thanh Market in District 1, gold and silver items are selling for 1.2 million dong (50 US dollars) to 5 million dong (230 US dollars).

The Phu Nhuan Jewelry Company is offering silver items designed with a “love” theme with prices range from 200,000 dong (9 US dollars) to more than 1 million dong (40 US dollars).

This season, domestic designers are offering collections called “Love for 2”.

Pairs of T-shirts designed in the same style, priced at 600,000 dong (27 US dollars), are selling like hotcakes at The New Playground, an indoor market on Ly Tu Trong street popular with young people.

"It is unlikely that people will worry too much about the sky-high price of flowers on Valentine’s Day, even those men who would normally lose their temper when asked to pay inflated prices for just one rose," said Thu Ha, a dealer at a flower shop in Ben Thanh Market. VNS/VNP
