Transport ministry orders investigation into Vietjet plane’s landing in wrong runway

The Ministry of Transport has ordered an urgent investigation into the latest incident at Vietjet Air when flight VJ689 of the budget carrier landed in a wrong runway at Cam Ranh International Airport in the south central province of Khanh Hoa at noon December 25.

Initial reports said at around 12:02, flight VJ689 from Cam Ranh to Ho Chi Minh City was forced to return to Cam Ranh due to a technical alarm. It then landed on a runway which has not been put into operation.

The incident poses serious threat in terms of aviation safety, said an urgent document issued by the ministry signed by Deputy Minister Le Dinh Tho.

The document asked the Civil Aviation Authority of Vienam (CAAV) to set up an investigation team to clarify the cause of the incident.

The CAAV has suspended the flight crew pending investigation.

The authority has also decided not to allow Vietjet to increase the number of flights. At the same time, it imposes special supervision of the budget carrier at four international airports of Noi Bai (in Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat (in Ho Chi Minh City), Cam Ranh, and Da Nang (the central city of Da Nang).
