Telecom giants launch mobile number portability

Mobile phone users can now switch to another telecom carrier without having to change their phone numbers as the three major telecom network providers in Vietnam – Viettel, VinaPhone, and MobiFone will officially launch the mobile number portability (MNP) from November 16.

MNP is a service that enables cellphone users to retain their phone numbers after changing mobile network providers.

In the first three months from November 16, MNP will be available only for postpaid subscribers of the networks, the Tuoi Tre (Youth) reported, saying after the period, the service will also be launched for prepaid users.

The Ministry of Information and Communications said it would be issuing more detailed instructions on the protocol and service charges for MNP before the date of the launch.

Currently, mobile users in Vietnam have to change numbers when deciding to switch to another carrier, as each network operator is allocated a different set of numbers.
