National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan hosted a reception in Hanoi on January 19 for President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Gabriela Cuevas Barron, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong and former IPU President Saber Hossain Chawdhury. 

 

The Vietnamese NA leader lauded the IPU President and former President for their opinions at the opening and plenary sessions of the 26th Annual Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF-26). 

 

She also thanked the guests for providing support for the Vietnamese legislature over the past years. 

 

Barron expressed her wish to invite Vietnam to many events hosted by the IPU. 

 

The guest also highly valued the Hanoi Declaration entitled “The Sustainable Development Goals: Turning Words into Action” that was issued at the 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. 

 

On the occasion, Ngan presented the Friendship Order to former IPU President Saber Hossain Chawdhury in the 2014-2017 term and to IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong for their active and effective dedication to fostering friendship and cooperation between the Vietnamese NA and IPU, thus improving Vietnam’s stature in the international arena. 

 

Chowdhury, in his speech, said the development of the IPU is partly supported by active members, including the Vietnamese NA.-VNA/VNP
