Men’s and women’s football teams leave for SEA Games 30

Both men’s and women’s U22 national football teams of Vietnam left for the Philippines on November 22 afternoon to compete in the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 30).

The squads have set the target of winning the gold medals at SEA Games 30.

The male team’s head coach Park Hang-seo brought with him 21 players, including a third reserve goalkeeper.

Vietnam will play against Brunei on November 25 in the opener of Group B which also includes Laos, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

Meanwhile, head coach Mai Duc Chung on November 21 finalised his 20-strong women’s squad that includes two goalkeepers, six defenders, nine midfielders and three strikers.

The team has just finished a 10-day intensive training camp in Japan and Chung was pleased with the progress of his players.

Vietnam, who won the AFF Championship in August, are in Group B and will play Thailand in the first match on November 26 and then Indonesia three days later at Binan Stadium in Laguna. Group A gathers Myanmar, Malaysia and the hosts.

The teams will compete in a round robin format and the two best of each group will advance to the semi-finals. The final is scheduled for December 9.

Two years ago in Malaysia, women’s football featured only five teams, competing in a round robin format. Vietnam triumphed after taking top place on goal difference over Thailand.
