Beijing, April 7 (VNA) – Diplomatic officials from six countries sharing the Mekong-Lancang River met for the first time in Beijing on April 6 to discuss sustainable development cooperation.
The meeting focused on establishing dialogue and cooperation mechanisms for the sub-region including goals, orientations and priority fields.
Liu Zhenmin, Chinese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that the establishment of dialogue and cooperation mechanisms is designed to maintain peace, stability, development and prosperity in the sub-region.
He said the meeting will open up dialogue and cooperation processes along the river and urged the participating countries to take advantage of their geography and strengthen security and political cooperation for stability in the sub-region and deepened and practical cooperation.
China proposed holding a conference of foreign ministers and a senior official meeting on dialogue and cooperation along the Mekong-Lancang River on the sidelines of the ASEAN-China summit meeting in Myanmar last year.
The Mekong-Lancang, the world’s 12th longest river, runs through China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
