HCM City to tighten surveillance on discharge of wastewater

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has instructed the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to use technology to monitor enterprises and residential areas to ensure they do not pollute the environment with wastewater.

Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Vo Van Hoan said as many local businesses have discharged wastewater directly into the environment without any treatment, the city in unable to resolve the pollution problem.

The city has carried out environmental surveillance at only industrial parks, hospitals and residential areas, which is not sufficient, he said.

Hoan told a meeting held to review the city’s socio-economic performance in the first eight months that the Department of Natural Resources and Environment must carry out surveillance at each enterprise. A smart system is needed to find out which business is discharging untreated wastewater into the environment.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment would impose punishments on violators, the Vice Chairman said.
