Cambodia province upgrades memorial to Vietnam’s volunteer soldiers

Phnom Penh, January 21 (VNA) – The upgrade of a memorial to Vietnamese volunteer soldiers began in Cambodia’s Kampong Chhnang province on January 21.

At a ceremony prior to the start of construction, Kampong Chhnang’s Mayor Chhu Chan Deon recalled that with prompt assistance from the Vietnamese volunteer force, Cambodia overthrew the genocidal Khmer Rough regime on January 7, 1979.

According to him, the restoration of the memorial, which lies in the heart of the province, is necessary as the site represents the friendship between Cambodia and Vietnam.

Vietnamese military attaché to Cambodia Nguyen Anh Dung said the upgrade is part of a project that renovates 12 memorial sites dedicated to Vietnamese volunteer soldiers across Cambodia in 2015 and 2016.

The project is estimated to cost 350,000 USD, sponsored by the Vietnam Government.

On January 20, similar upgrade was launched for the memorial site, which was built in 1988, in Kampot province./.
