Lam Son Commune in Ninh Son District, NinhThuanProvince (Central Vietnam) has been known for its gardens on the mountain side near the Ngoan Muc (Spectacular) Pass, where different kinds of fruit trees are grown, such as mangosteen, rambutan, star apple, pomelo, avocado, etc.
Ngoan Muc (or Song Pha) Pass is one of Vietnam's most beautiful passes. It snakes along the mountain sides connecting Ninh Son Valley with Lang Biang Plateau. More than 100 years ago the famous adventurer – Doctor A. Yersin stopped here before continuing on to Lang Biang Plateau to discover the present-day romantic resort city of Da Lat. Ngoan Muc Pass is a stop-over for tourists on their way to visit the "green triangle" consisting of Da Lat – Phan Rang – Nha Trang. The location which is 300m above sea level is ideal for growing fruit trees due to the year round temperate climate.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the foot of NgoanMucPass to fruit gardens on the mountain side, 300m above sea level. |

In 2007, Ninh Thuan Province's authorities called on investors to develop the eco-tourist quarter at Sakai Waterfall and Ngoan Muc Pass into an ideal destination for tourists. People responded and under the development plan, a network of rest houses, an entertainment quarter at Sakai Waterfall and lookout stops for sight-seeing along Ngoan Muc Pass will be built at an estimated cost of just over 30 billion VND.
Thai Van Phong, a member of Lam Son Commune's Economics Section, said that the local authorities are building a brand name for Song Pha fruits cultivated on more than 200 hectares of land. Thanks to the special geographic and climatic conditions, "made in Song Pha" fruits are very delicious, thus they are sold at higher prices than similar kinds of fruit from other localities. At present, one hectare of the orchard garden annually brings a profit of about 50 million VND to the owner.
In the coming years, Lam Son villagers will establish high-quality intensive orchard gardens and register a brand name for their products. The Research Centre for Agricultural Development in the South Eastern region and Central Highlands sent cadres to Lam Son Commune to survey and set up the project on developing the garden economy on an area of 350 hectares in the direction of intensive cultivation of high-quality fruits. This specialized orchard gardens, plus the eco-tourist business in Lam Son Commune will be one of the solutions for sustainable development that helps in increasing the local people's economic life.
