The second battle against COVID-19 in Da Nang

Right after Vietnam confirmed the 416th COVID-19 patient - the first community infection case during the second outbreak in Da Nang - the central city once again has entered into a new battle with a strong determination to prevent and control the epidemic with the motto “no one left behind”.
On July 25, a patient was tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Da Nang, the first case after 99 days of no community transmission in Vietnam. The situation became more complicated when many new cases were recorded. A COVID-19 patient - the 428th case with multiple comorbidities died in Hue Central Hospital on July 31 which was the first death related to COVID- 19 in Vietnam.

With support from people and other localities nationwide, Da Nang has made the effort to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19. Dealing with the complicated development, the city introduced social distancing measures in accordance with Directive No 19/CT-TTg dated April 24  from midnight on July 28. Hospitals, roads and residential areas were lockdown. The two field hospitals of Hoa Vang and Thien Son were set up and willing to receive and give treatment to COVID-19 patients.

The government and Ministry of Health urgently sent medical experts, doctors and advanced medical facilities to support the people of Da Nang. At that time, Hai Phong, Binh Dinh, Hue and Nghe An also sent medical teams. Numerous essential goods, face masks as well as money from localities were donated.

During that time, Da Nang applied drastic measures to curb the COVID-19 outbreak, including contact tracing and mass testing. “We have to do things faster than the epidemic transmission. The faster the tests, the sooner the results and the sooner we curb the COVID-19 spread. We try to test 20,000 samples per day and expand mass tests,” said Chairman of Da Nang People’s Committee Huynh Duc Tho.

According to the chart of COVID-19 situation in Da Nang reported by the municipal health department, the number of COVID-19 patients was recorded at a peak of 45 and 34 on July 31 and August 5. The figures decreased in the following days.

Thanks to applying timely and drastic measures, the COVID-19 outbreak in Da Nang is under control provisionally. COVID-19 cases have been reduced significantly, recording an important stride in an unpredictable and complicated situation of the pandemic.

From July 25 to August 31, Da Nang recorded 386 COVID-19 cases, with 168 people having recovered and 25 having died.
