Southeast Asia wrestling championship opens in Bac Ninh

Bac Ninh, November 24 (VNA) – Some 125 athletes are competing at the Southeast Asian wrestling championship, which opened in the northern province of Bac Ninh on November 23.

The wrestlers, from Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, will grapple for 24 sets of medals in three events: folk wrestling, women’s freestyle wrestling and men’s freestyle wrestling.

According to Nguyen The Long, head of the wrestling department of the National Sports Administration, the event attracted top wrestlers, including 48 from Vietnam, with thrilling matches on the cards.

The three-day championship will help Bac Ninh province popularise its people and land to domestic and international friends while promoting wrestling in the locality, Vietnam and abroad.

It also aims to tighten solidarity among ASEAN member states, helping build a peaceful and prosperous bloc.
