A seminar was held at the military school of the northernmost province of Ha Giang on February 15 to recall the war that defended the northern border 40 years ago.
Col. Nguyen Kim Chung, former Deputy Commander of Politics at the Military High Command of Ha Giang province during the struggle, noted the indescribable losses in the war, adding that residents in six northern border provinces, including Ha Tuyen – which is now Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang provinces – suffered from considerable losses and pain.
From when the war broke out on February 17, 1979 to March 18 the same year along the borderline of Ha Tuyen, China sent two regular military divisions, border guards, and other forces to attack seven border districts of the province. Fierce battles took place here not only in 1979, but also in 1980, 1981, and 1984, he said.
Soldiers and people of Ha Tuyen province heroically fought to safeguard every inch of the Fatherland’s sacred territory, Chung stressed.
Chung added that they fought against the invaders, not the people of the neighbouring country who also have the aspirations of peace, cooperation, and development. Therefore, it is necessary to build up solidarity among nations nowadays, he added.
Sen. Lieut. Col. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, a political commissar at the Tung Vai border guard post of Ha Giang, said border guards have encouraged border residents to enhance solidarity, friendship, and cooperation in production and economic development.
In recent years, Ha Giang and the Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi have organised many activities to strengthen friendship and multifaceted cooperation to promote common development and ensure local peace and security, thereby helping to improve people’s living standards in border areas, the officer noted.
