Mekong Delta localities launch mass release of shrimp, fish fry

On March 31, Soc Trang province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development released 3.5 million Asian tiger shrimp fry into the sea at the Tran De fishing port.

On April 1, Ben Tre released nearly one million tonnes of fish fry and 100,000 breeding prawns into the local Ba Lai River in Chau Thanh district.

The provincial fisheries association has also required local fishermen to halt all fishing activities between April 1 and 7.

The same day, a fish release campaign was launched in Can Tho City.

According to Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Dao Anh Dung, the campaign was expected to set free three tonnes of Siamese giant carps at nine locations in nine local districts. The figure was 6 times higher than that of 2013.

Having high economic value, Siamese giant carps’ population has been severely depleted in recent years.

The mass release of young fish and shrimp is an annual activity on the occasion of the traditional day of the fishery sector (April 1, 1959 - 2017).
