Lao students in Thua Thien-Hue celebrate Bunpimay festival

Some 500 Laos students, who are studying in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, gathered on April 7 to celebrate their traditional New Year festival of Bunpimay.

The celebration was held by the Hue University and Hue College of Education with various traditional rituals such as splashing water to pray for prosperity in the new year, and tying strings around a person’s wrist to wish for good health, luck and success.

Lao students introduced their unique culture through their traditional dance.

Bunpimay festival is observed on April 13-16 annually to pray for good weather, health, abundant harvests and prosperity. The programme helps cheer up Lao students and tightens friendship and solidarity between the two countries.

On the occasion, the Lao Consulate General in Da Nang city presented certificates of merit to 15 Lao students for their excellent academic performance.

Universities and colleges across Thua Thien-Hue province have trained about 1,200 Lao students via a cooperation programme between Vietnamese and Lao localities. Annually, the province provides 10 scholarships for students in Laos’ provinces of Salavan, Sekong, Champasak, Khammuon and Savannakhet.
