Hung Kings’ death anniversary commemorated overseas

A ceremony commemorating the death anniversary of Hung Kings, the legendary founders of Vietnam, took place at the Warsaw Buddhism culture centre, Poland, on April 14 with traditional rituals.

Addressing the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Poland Vu Dang Dung highlighted the significance of the worshipping rituals of the Hung Kings, recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Apart from introducing international and Polish friends to Vietnam’s fine tradition of "When drinking water, remember its sources”, the event helps the young Vietnamese generation living in Poland understand more about the culture of worshipping of the Vietnamese people, thus contributing to strengthening the expatriate community’s solidarity towards the homeland.

A similar event was held in Ukraine’s Kharkov province on April 13. Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Ukraine Nguyen Anh Tuan highly valued preparations of the Vietnamese community in Kharkov for the event.

He affirmed the Vietnamese Embassy's support for the Vietnamese community in Ukraine, wishing that they will continue to unite and help each other while preserving Vietnam’s cultural identity.

While in Bern, Switzerland, the Vietnamese Embassy held a get-together for the Vietnamese community on April 14 to mark the death anniversary of Hung Kings.

Ambassador Duong Chi Dung, head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva, and Chairwoman of the Switzerland-Vietnam Friendship Association Anjuska Weil were also present at the event.

In her address, Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Le Linh Lan said the meeting was a great chance for overseas Vietnamese living and studying in Switzerland to strengthen their bonds while promoting their national patriotism.

She called on the Vietnamese community to further contribute to boosting Vietnam’s development as well as its cooperation with the European country.

Legend has it that the Hung Kings ruled Vietnam from 2879 BC until 258 BC and they are widely considered the founders of the nation. To honour the Kings, the tenth day of the third lunar month was designated as their national commemorative anniversary date.

The worshipping rituals of the Hung Kings are closely related to the ancestral worshipping tradition of most Vietnamese families which forms an important part of people's spiritual lives. It was recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012.
