Eleven sailors on sunken Panamanian ship rescued

Rescue forces have found 11 alive sailors and the bodies of two others after their Panama-flagged cargo ship sank near Phu Quy island, offshore the south central province of Binh Thuan, late December 17.

The rescued sailors were brought to a port in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau in the morning of December 19 by ship 6007 of the Command of the Coast Guard Zone 3.

Two remaining sailors on the ship are still missing.

The Xin Hong cargo ship with 15 crew members, 11 Chinese and four Vietnamese, on board capsized in rough seas off Vietnam on December 17 while transporting 7,800 tonnes of clay from Malaysia to Hong Kong.

The ship’s captain had contacted Vietnam for help earlier on the day when it began to list in rough seas.

The Binh Thuan Border Guard High Command sent a rescue team to the waters.

The coordinating centre for maritime search and rescue Region III is working with Binh Thuan authorities to instruct vessels operating in the waters where the Xin Hong was in distress to search for the remaining two missing sailors.
