APEC 2017: Vietnam, Papua New Guinea enhance cooperation

Da Nang, November 9 (VNA) – Vietnam is willing to support and share experience to help Papua New Guinea fulfil its role as host of the APEC Year 2018, stated President Tran Dai Quang.

Quang made the remark at a reception for Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O'Neill in the central city of Da Nang on November 9.

The President asked the PM and the Papua New Guinea Government to handle the local arrest of Vietnamese fishing vessels based on humanitarian spirit and bilateral relations.

For his part, PM O'Neill said he believes Vietnam will organise the APEC Year 2017 with success and invited President Tran Dai Quang to attend the APEC 2018 Economic Leaders’ Week in Papua New Guinea.

He pledged to promptly and properly deal with the issue of Vietnamese fishermen.

Both sides agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in agriculture, oil and gas exploration, fishery, and tourism, to improve legal framework in facilitation of bilateral trade and investment, and to support each other at international forums and organisations.

Regarding the East Sea issue, both sides shared a common view on conflict resettlement in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
