Vietnam responds to World Antibiotic Awareness Week

The Health Ministry, along with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Vietnam Medical Association, held a meeting in Hanoi on November 11 to respond to the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (November 18-24).

At the event, Director of the Health Ministry's Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Luong Ngoc Khue stressed that antibiotic resistance poses an increasing threat to both humans and Vietnam’s economy due to the widespread and uncontrolled use of antibiotic in health care and animal husbandry. This is a problem of the world, especially in developing countries, he said.

Vietnam has responded to the World Health Organisation’s call on fighting antibiotic resistance since 2013, and is among the first countries to build a national action plan for combating antibiotic resistance for 2013-2020.

Taking note of Vietnam’s progress in the fight, the WHO Representative in Vietnam Kidong Park and FAO Representative in Vietnam Albert T.Lieberg pledged continued support for Vietnam.

The World Antibiotic Awareness Week aims to increase awareness of global antibiotic resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance./
