Vietnam - Laos Friendship, an Invaluable Treasure

Party General Secretary Nguyen PhuTrong successfully wrapped up his official friendly visit to Laos from November 24-26, 2016. It was the first overseas trip of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong after the 12th National Party Congress. The visit expressed a special friendship of the two peoples and two nations and also was an opportunity for the two countries to strengthen their special solidarity and Vietnam – Laos comprehensive cooperation in a new phase. 
During the trip, both sides affirmed that the traditional friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperationis an invaluable asset of the two parties and the two peoples and the laws in existence and development of each country. Thereby, the two sides emphasised that the protection, maintenance and development of the above relations is a common responsibility of the two parties, states and peoples, especially the younger generation, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

The two sides agreed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in many fields of politics, economics, culture, education and science-technology; foster the education and popularization of the special traditional Vietnam –Laos relations for cadres, party members and peoples of all classes; coordinate to prepare for the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in 2017.

The leaders also reached a consensus on timely sharing information and closely coordinating at regional and international forums. Underscoring the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security and safety in the East Sea, the leaders agreed to advocate the settlement of the East Sea dispute by peaceful means on the basis of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982), and join related parties in fully and effectively implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), towards the early formulation of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea for peace, security, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

On the occasion, the Party, State and people of Vietnam will fund to build the National Assembly’s headquarters at That Luang Square, in Vientiane. Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will also fund the building of a high school in Bolikhamxay Province. The two sides signed seven cooperation documents in many fields and announced the Vietnam – Laos joint statement.
