Vietnam Pays Last Respects to General Vo Nguyen Giap

On October 12-13, 2013, the state funeral for General Vo Nguyen Giap – the national hero and the legendary General of Vietnam was solemnly held in Hanoi Capital, Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Binh Province-his native land. On the same days, many provinces and cities nationwide and military units and Vietnamese diplomatic agencies abroad erected altars for the deceased.

On October 12, the tribute-paying ceremony was held at the National Morgue at No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi.

Early in the morning, the leaders of the Party, State, Government and National Assembly, former Party and State leaders, armed forces, international friends and thousands of Vietnamese people from all walks of life gathered at the National Morgue to bid farewell to legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap, an excellent student of President Ho Chi Minh, steadfast revolutionary fighter and the first General of the Vietnam Peoples’ Army who devoted his whole life to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the Nation.

The General’s casket was placed in the middle of the memorial platform and covered by the national flag. Near it was his familiar kepi. Army officers in white uniforms stood at attention at General Giap’s casket, over which a large mourning portrait of General Giap was displayed along with many of his orders and military medals as incense wafted through the air.

After paying their last respects to General Vo Nguyen Giap at the funeral in Hanoi, top leaders wrote praises in memory of the deceased.

In his notes, Party General Nguyen Phu Trong called General Giap “Anh Van” (Brother Van), describing him as a highly prestigious leader of the Vietnamese Party, State and people; an outstanding and close disciple of President Ho Chi Minh; a staunch revolutionary fighter; a brilliant military commander, the General and Commander-in-Chief and the eldest brother of the Vietnam People’s Army who rendered great service to the revolution of the Vietnamese Party and people.

“Your great name, career, humanity and contributions leave a deep imprint in the heart of the people and the nation’s history. We pledge to learn from your ideology, morality, style and example forever,” the Party leader wrote.

On October 13, the State Funeral Committee solemnly held the memorial service and burial ceremony for General Vo Nguyen Giap in the Vung Chua-Yen Island area, Quang Dong Commune, Quang Trach District, Quang Binh Province – the General’s native land.

After Party leader’s eulogy, mourners filed past the casket and it began as a gun carriage that is followed by a howitzer firing left the national morgue to Giap’s residence.

Thousands of Vietnamese mourners lined the streets of Hanoi, many in tears, crying, chanting and praying for the 103 year-old hero who is dubbed “the General of Vietnamese people” when the gun carriage pulled the flag draped coffin of General Giap to proceed slowly from the National Morgue through streets of Hanoi to the Noi Bai airport where it was taken to Quang Binh for burial service.
