According to Dung, his mother inspired him a lot about art. When he was 12, he did a homework which was to describe a rabbit by writing a poem. His teacher gave him mark 1 because she thought Dung copied the poem. Dung was then encouraged by his mother when she said “She misunderstands you so your poem must have been very nice”.
“I was afraid and obsessed with the story on which the movie is based for a long time”, Dung recalled of a story which inspired him to make “Father and son”. When Dung was 6, on the way to Tuyen Quang with his father, they witnessed an 18-year-old boy using a bamboo carrying pole to beat his own father. Dung’s father went to stop the beating and asked the father why he did not call the police. The father said his son beat him just because he was drunk and he thought the son would go back to being normal when he was sober.
"Father and son" was born with a desire to arouse the humanity in someone who forgets it because of their busy life. A father's love or a mother's love is a great and very sacred thing. "In the film, details of the dream of flying on an airplane is also a dream that I had which was to take my mother on an airplane but she passed away before I could do it”, Dung said. Director Mike Newell who directed "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", "Prince of Persia", "Four Weddings and a Funeral", commented: "Luong Dinh Dung is the creator of beautiful images and different stories".
This is the reason why Dung decided to film "578: Bullets of a mad man” even though the film’s topic is controversial and many people tried to prevent it from being made. Through the film, Dung wanted to convey a strong message to the community that it is important to prevent child sexual abuse.
