Vietnam Contributes to the Success of the 30th ASEAN Summit

The 30th ASEAN Summit took place in Manila, the Philippines from April 28-29, 2017. The Vietnamese delegation led by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made important contributions to the summit’s success. 
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and leaders of other ASEAN countries praised the outcomes reached over the years, mapped out orientations for building the ASEAN Community, discussed measures to promote external relations and the central role of the bloc as well as exchanged ideas on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Addressing a plenary session of the summit, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc urged ASEAN to place a high premium on ensuring benefits for people and building a people-centered community while improving the association’s operational efficiency and strengthening the intra-bloc solidarity, cooperation and regional connectivity.

The Vietnamese leader also mentioned ways to tackle both traditional and non-conventional security challenges, especially climate change and pirates on the sea. He expressed his concern about the escalation of tensionon the Korean Peninsula and the East Sea and the East China Sea, and urged ASEAN to promote the basic principles and a common stance on solving disputes by peaceful measures in line with international law.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the ASEAN leaders expressed their concerns over the complicated developments, including military activities in the East Sea. They affirmed that ASEAN will deal with the disputes with peaceful measures. They will fully and strictly implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and work towards formulation of an effective and feasible Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), contributing to maintaining peace, stability and security for aviation and navigation safety.

At the Summit, the Vietnamese delegation performed well its task as the chair of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) and coordinated the ASEAN – India dialogue in the context of the two sides celebrating the 25th anniversary of ASEAN – India relations.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had meetings with heads of delegations and leaders of ASEAN countries attending the summit, including President of the Philippines Rodrigo Roa Duterte, Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak, and Myanmar State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi to seek measures to bolster bilateral collaboration and solve specific issues.
