Vietnam bans dirty diesel cars from January 1

The Vietnam Register (VR) said it will stop granting safety certificates to diesel cars that fail to meet European emission standard 4 or higher beginning on January 1.

The move was made in line with the national roadmap on vehicles’ emission standards, which was issued in 2011.

According to the VR, all diesel cars manufactured, assembled in or imported into Vietnam must meet the Euro 4 standards before they are allowed to complete safety tests and receive certificates.

Car providers that produce or import diesel cars must complete all necessary administrative procedures, for customs or car safety checks, and put the cars on the market by December 31, 2017 at the latest. Otherwise, they will have to export the vehicles that fail to meet the standards out of Vietnam.

A survey by the VR shows that nearly 50 auto companies will have to adjust their business plans due to the decision.

Vietnam establishes itself as one of region’s most dynamic manufacturing and supply bases

The country’s stable political and economic environment provides a critical foundation for long-term sourcing strategies. At the same time, Vietnam has demonstrated a strong ability to scale up manufacturing, supported by a continuously expanding industrial base capable of meeting both high-volume demand and increasingly complex technical and quality requirements.
