Hanoi bans Uber, Grab cars during rush hours

Contracted Uber and Grab cars are not allowed to run across 13 streets in the capital city during rush hours, 6 – 9 am and 4:30 – 7:30 pm, starting January 11.

Ban signs for the under-9-seat online hired cabs were already put at these streets, including Hoang Hoa Tham, Mai Xuan Thuong, Giang Vo, Lang Ha, Le Van Luong, Truong Chinh, Kham Thien, Chuong Duong bridge, Hang Bai, Phu Doan, Cau Giay, Xuan Thuy, and Giai Phong.

Head of the Hanoi Transport Department Vu Van Vien said traditional taxies have also been banned from these streets during rush hours in a bid to curb traffic jams.

Violated vehicles are subjected to fines, he added.

The department had previously submitted a document asking the Hanoi People’s Committee to limit the number of Grab and Uber vehicles as well as service providers.

The respective numbers of Grab Taxi and Uber vehicles in Hanoi are some 11,400 and nearly 2,400.
