ASEAN promotes gender equality, women protection

HeForShe campaign, designed to encourage men and boys to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, was launched by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on November 30 in response to International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25).

In his remark, ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh laid stress on the group’s commitment to eliminating discrimination against women.

Everyone has the responsibility to popularise a culture that all men and boys respect women and girls, which is necessary to promote rights of women and girls in the bloc, he stressed, adding that this is a crucial step to build a comprehensive ASEAN community in the coming years.

Although ASEAN member states have gained achievements in gender equality, there should be more actions to ensure that women have equal rights with men, Minh said. He stated that HeForShe campaign affirms ASEAN’s efforts in protecting women and girls.

Rapid economic development in many Asian countries, including Vietnam, has resulted in advancement in gender equality and human right promotion, PhD Miwa Kato, UN Women Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, told Vietnam News Agency correspondents.

She believed that women and girls are having more chances to show off their capacity and promotion opportunities.

HeForShe, initiated by the UN Women, is a global campaign for gender equality that encourages men and boys to take actions against gender inequality.
