White sardines are a small species of fish like the anchovy but it has a larger width, pellucid flesh and a non-fishy taste.
Regularly, from November to April white sardines gather into the shoals to look for food and breed. It also is the most suitable time for fishermen in Giao Thuy District, Nam Dinh Province to catch white sardines.
In rush months, there are over 400 fishing boats going to sea to catch white sardines. On average, each boat catches 1-2 tonnes of fish per day.
This year, white sardines are sold at a good price, about 15, 000 VND/kg, which encourages fishermen to go to sea to catch the fish. Nguyen Van Lam, a boat owner in Quat Lam, said: “The white sardine crop is considered ‘a rice pot in reserve’ of fishermen before the flood season. Each fishing crop, each household earns from 100 – 500 million VND after deducting expenses.”
White sardines are a specialty of the sea, especially in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa Province) and Giao Thuy (Nam Dinh Province). For this reason, frozen white sardine products in Giao Thuy are sought after by customers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Every day, at 6am, fishermen in Giao Thuy District prepare fishing boats and nets for going to sea.

At sunrise, boats follow one another to go to sea to catch white sardines.

At sunset, boats full of white sardines return.

Fresh white sardines have just been caught from the sea.
