Prime Minister Attends Regional Summits in Laos

From March 12-15, 2013, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended the 6th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Summit (CLMV 6), the 7th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Summit (CLV 7) and the 5th Ayeyawadi-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS 5).
At CLMV 6, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung emphasized the great target of cooperation of the four countries was to strengthen regional integration, foster and enhance the role of the four countries in the regional and global production chain and narrow the development gap among the four countries and other countries in ASEAN. Prime Minister Dung also proposed the enhancement of cooperation effectiveness among the four countries through practical projects which have a high feasibility and take full advantage of the inner and outside sources. He also suggested the promotion of cooperation among the four countries in the fields of trade, investment and tourism.

During his stay in Laos, Minister Nguyen Tan Dung chaired CLV 7. At the summit, the three government leaders appreciated the efforts made by the triangle’s 13 provinces in socio-economic development, especially during a period that the world and the region are facing many economic difficulties. At the end of the summit, the three countries’ prime ministers signed a joint statement, affirming their commitment to improve the living standards of people in the triangle’s 13 provinces and turn the area into an example of success in regional cooperation

At ACMECS 5, the leaders adopted the Vientiane Declaration and the 2013-2015 ACMECS Action Plan in the spirit of working closely with the ASEAN economic community-building process and carrying out the master plan on ASEAN connectivity that aims to improve the competitiveness of ACMECS nations, as well as expand their profile in global production and supply chains. At the summit, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung proposed the three major targets for ACMECS over the coming period, primarily improving the competitiveness of member nations through the linking of markets, forming regional supply and production chains, increasing the quality of human capital; supporting the process of building a fully-fledged ASEAN community by 2015; ensuring the sustainable development in the region and managing and sustainably using the natural resources with three rivers of Ayeyawadi, Chao Phraya and Mekong.

On the sidelines of the summits, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung had talks and meetings with Lao Party General Secretary, State President Choummaly Sayasone, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the Vice President of Myanmar Sai Mauk Kham. He also visited the provinces of Xieng Khouang and Huaphanh in Laos.
