Party chief's visit deepens Russia-Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's official visit to Russia from September 5-8 has created a new impulse for and further deepened the Russia-Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership. During his trip, the Vietnamese Party leader held talks with President Putin and met Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the State Duma of Russia Vyacheslav Volodin, and Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of Russia Andrey Turchak.

He laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Mausoleum, and the Statue of President Ho Chi Minh in Moscow, and attended a ceremony to celebrate the 60th founding anniversary of the Russia-Vietnam Friendship Association. He also met with Russian veterans and experts who have worked in Vietnam, and visited Kaluga province.

During the talks, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Putin affirmed the consistent policy of strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries in order to meet the long-term interests of their peoples, and agreed on the importance of maintaining joint efforts to promote cooperation in all areas, such as military technique; improving the cooperation mechanism, and effectively implementing the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union as well as its member nations; improving the effectiveness of activities of the Vietnam-Russia Senior Working Group on priority investment projects in order to develop and implement projects in the fields of industry and electrical energy; mining and mineral processing; agriculture; information and telecommunications; and urban and transport infrastructure in localities all over Vietnam and expanding the area for exploration and exploitation of oil and gas on the continental shelf of Vietnam.

The two sides confirmed that maintaining peace and stability and strengthening mutual trust are core factors to ensure stable development in the Asia-Pacific region. They exchanged their opinions regarding international and regional matters of common interests. They both supported the necessity of tackling conflict by peaceful measures without the use of, or threat to use, force and with respect to international law through forums as the ASEAN - Russia Summit, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), East Asia Summit (EAS) and ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+).

The Party chief's visit was highly spoken by Russian experts and scholars. Director of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies Sergey Luzianin said that Russia has always affirmed that Vietnam is a bridge to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with which Russia plans to establish durable ties, he said.

Director of the Vietnam-ASEAN Research Centre Vladimir Mazyrin highlighted the characteristics of the political system in Vietnam led by the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV). He also emphasised the CPV leader Nguyen Phu Trong’s personal prestige in the fight against corruption, which has been welcomed by many countries globally.

He suggested reaching for more strategic projects to fulfil the goal of lifting two-way trade to 10 billion US dollars by 2020, adding that in order to match the strategic partnership level, Russia needs to access more of Vietnam’s key projects, including those in nuclear power and metro systems.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Ngo Duc Manh expressed his belief that the two countries will score new achievements in the near future, contributing to their own development and for the peace, well-being, stability, and cooperation in the region and the world.
