From fishermen’s strong sense of responsibility to swift action by local authorities, Khanh Hoa province is mobilising resources to implement the European Commission’s recommendations on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
The south-central province currently has 5,120 fishing vessels measuring six metres or more in length. All have been marked in accordance with regulations, registered, licensed for fishing and updated in the VNFishbase system, ensuring that all vessels are accounted for.
Local authorities have strengthened inspections and monitoring while raising fishermen’s awareness of IUU fishing regulations. Fishing vessel owners and crews are encouraged to strictly comply with requirements on registration, fishing licenses, vessel monitoring and catch documentation.
Particular attention is given to preventing fishing vessels from operating in foreign waters. Authorities have increased patrols and monitoring and are taking measures to detect and promptly handle violations.
Fishermen are also playing an important role in the province’s efforts. By complying with regulations and maintaining proper records of their fishing activities, they contribute to sustainable fisheries and help protect Vietnam’s reputation in international markets.
With coordinated efforts by authorities, fishermen and other stakeholders, Khanh Hoa is working to address shortcomings identified by the European Commission and promote responsible and sustainable fishing.
