Strengthening the special relationship between Vietnam and Russia

From February 20-22, 2017, President of the Federal Council of Russia Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko paid an official visit to Vietnam. During meetings with Vietnamese leaders, Matvienko said that her country will do everything possible to develop the comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam.
This official visit of the President was considered a chance to create a new impetus, and contribute to reinforcing and developing further the Vietnam – Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, especially cooperation between the two legislatures of Russia and Vietnam and promoting cooperation in potential sectors such as defence-security, education and training, culture, tourism, science- technology, energy, and oil and gas.

At the talks with National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, President Matvienko has stated that Russia is paying heed to further strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the two legislatures of Russia and Vietnam. Russia also treasures the development of bilateral economic and investment ties.

On the occasion, the two sides agreed that two-way trade is growing robustly towards the targeted 10 billion US dollars by 2020. The two legislatures will create more favorable conditions to expand ties in energy, oil and gas, agriculture, industry and tourism while intensifying the supervision of a cooperation agreement realization.

Relating to education – training, the Russian leader said that it was an effective cooperation between the two countries and Russia is considering increasing scholarships to Vietnamese students.

Hailing the partnership between the two countries’ localities as an effective cooperation channel, President Matvienko suggested the friendship parliamentarian organisations of the two nations make a report on the efficiency of their joint work.

During the official visit, President Matvienko also had meetings with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Tran Dai Quang, and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

At the meeting with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the Russian leader said that her country will do everything possible to develop the comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam.

According to the website of the Federal Council of Russia, at the meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, President Matvienko affirmed that the two countries have absolute confidence proved through their history.  She expressed satisfaction on the development of the Vietnam - Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including in sectors of economics, politics, trade and humanity.
