Australia supports fruit growers in northwest region

Hanoi , September 19 (VNA) – Farmers in the three northwestern provinces of Lao Cai, Son La and Lai Chau will have a chance to improve their incomes and livelihood from selling tropical fruit to potential markets.

This is one of the goals of a 1.4 million USD project funded by the Australian Government. It will be implemented between now and 2018 via the Australia Centre of International Agriculture Research (ACIAR).

The project also aims to increase competitiveness and market access of Vietnam ’s tropical and semi-tropical fruit products.

It will make assessments on market demands and consumers’ tastes as well as opportunities in provinces, countries and region while investing in developing high-quality varieties and renovating technologies.

Vietnam expects to earn 1.2 billion USD from fruit and vegetable exports this year. The country’s key fruit exports are lychee, longan, dragon fruit, banana, mango, star fruit, rambutan, and grapefruit.
