As part of the EU Climate Diplomacy Week 2019, the event sees the participation of Ambassador-Head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam Giorgio Aliberti, members of the EU Delegation, and about 200 volunteers of KHC, along with local residents.
Speaking at the event on October 12, Giorgio Aliberti said that the EU is proud of supporting this campaign, which aims to not only clean up the areas but also raise public awareness of this issue.
From 8am to 11.30am, and from 2pm until 5.30pm, the volunteers carry necessary tools to collect waste along the Red River banks and the area underneath Long Bien Bridge.
Within the framework of the campaign, residential areas will be provided with big rubbish bins and households will share the daily responsibility of transporting these dustbins to the area where waste can be collected.
The programme will help poor households living near Long Bien Bridge with keeping their living environment clean and reducing waste discharged into the Red River.
The campaign is part of the EU’s support plan for Vietnam relating to the environment, natural disasters and climate change as well as sustainable investment projects worth 350 million EUR.
Long Bien Bridge and the Red River are indispensable parts of the history of Hanoi’s formation and development. Therefore, participating in the campaign is not only to protect the environment but to help protect the heritages of the multi-thousand-year-old capital city.
Vietnam is assessed by experts as one of the five countries hardest hit by climate change and calamities caused by it.
