Party chief’s visit charts new course for VN-Cambodia ties

The visit to Cambodia by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong from July 20-22  is an important historical milestone in the bilateral relations, as it took place in the year in which the two countries are celebrating 50 years since the establishment of their diplomatic ties. 
The visit also bears a historical significance and constitutes a vivid manifestation of the sound neighbourliness, a time-honoured traditional friendship between the two parties, governments and people. The visit creates favourable conditions for the two sides to address existing problems in their relations, bringing relations to a deeper and more sustainable level.

During three days visit, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has effective 22 meetings with Cambodian top ranking officials. The Party chief met King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni, Queen Mother of Cambodia Norodom Monineath Sihanouk and leaders from  Cambodian Government and National Assembly.

The two sides shared the views that achievements attained over the past 50 years serve as an important foundation and provides a springboard for the two countries to lift their ties to the next level with durable trust, productive and concrete assistance, broader cooperation and closer coordination at multilateral forums.

The past 50 years have proven the close ties between Vietnam and Cambodia, which have been tested through struggles for national independence and against the genocidal regime Pol Pot, and the cause of national development in each country.

They affirmed that changes on the world arena cannot affect the solidarity and friendship between the two countries, expressing their belief that the current visit to Cambodia by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the recent visit to Vietnam by Prime Minister Hun Sen will help with spurring the friendly neighbourliness and all-faceted cooperation between the two countries.

The leaders showed their delight that the ties between the two Parties and countries have unceasingly been cemented and expanded across the board, contributing to maintaining political stability and spurring socio-economic development in the respective countries.

The two sides agreed that in all circumstances, Vietnam and Cambodia must remain good, sincere, and faithful neighbours, having close-knit ties and all-faceted, efficient and concrete cooperation.

For the first time, the two countries’ Ministers of Foreign Affairs signed a joint statement enhancing the Vietnam-Cambodia friendship and all-around collaboration in the witness of the Vietnamese Party chief, the Cambodian Prime Minister and other leaders. The joint statement mentions the major directions for developing the bilateral relations in all fields in the near future, along with solutions addressing a number of existing problems.
