Australia arrests woman selling invalid tickets to Vietnamese students

Sydney, January 14 (VNA) – Australian police in Sydney arrested a woman on January 13 for allegedly selling fake airline tickets to overseas Vietnamese students through Facebook.

The 24-year-old suspect is a Vietnamese national and has the Facebook account name Vi Tran. She was arrested at Petersham district – about 6 kilometers southwest of Sydney’s central business district.

The woman has been temporarily detained and is due to go on a trial on February 3 on charges of making illegal profits via swindling.

On January 7, New South Wales police conducted an investigation after receiving information from overseas Vietnamese students in Sydney and Melbourne, saying they had been tricked into buying invalid air tickets for Vietnam Airlines through a Facebook account named Vi Tran.

The investigation is still underway.

About 240 students have been caught out by the scam, losing over 360,000 AUD (250,461 USD).
