Vice President welcomes spouse of US Vice President

Hanoi, July 20 (VNA) – Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan hosted a reception for the spouse of the US Vice President, Jill Biden in Hanoi on July 19.

The Vice President welcomed the visit by Jill Biden which took place just after the official visit to the US by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and on the occasion of the 20 th anniversary of normolisation of Vietnam-US diplomatic ties.

She hailed the positive and practical progresses in the Vietnam-US ties, especially since they established a comprehensive partnership in July 2013.

Vice President Doan appreciated the US’s stronger cooperation in education, addressing war aftermath, removing bombs and mines left from the war, detoxifying Agent Orange/Dioxin contaminated sites, and supporting people with disabilities.

She suggested Vietnam and the US should increase exchanges and collaboration in promoting the role of women and gender equality as well as people-to-people exchanges for the sake of the two peoples and the maintenance of peace, stability, security, cooperation and development in the region and beyond.

Jill Biden said the Vietnamese Party chief’s recent visit to the US created a foundation to deepen the Vietnam-US relations in the coming time.

She thanked Vietnam for assisting the US in searching for US soldiers reported missing in action during wartime in Vietnam.

She also affirmed that she will work to support Vietnam in the fields of education, humanitarian aids, and addressing post-war consequences.

Highlighting the vital role of gender equality and education in each countries’ development strategy, Jill Biden said she hopes the two sides will push ahead with cooperation in the fields.

Earlier, Jill Biden attended an event organised by the US Embassy in Hanoi to present helmets for Vietnamese children.
