| Noong Nhai, a small ethnic hamlet in Thanh Xuong Commune, Dien Bien
District, where on April 25, 1954 French bombers killed 444 civilians,
most of them women and children, has changed a lot over the past 50 years.
Visiting the hamlet nowadays, visitors can not only see the life of ethnic
people, but also dance with Thai girls, who are gentle, beautiful and
hard-working.
Although
staying in Noong Nhai for a short time, it was enough for us to realize
the life in this once poor hamlet has now become more comfortable. On the
existing 21 hectares of rice paddies that supply food for 390 people, the
local people now plant two crops per year with a new special fragrant rice
strain, increasing the output by 1.5 times. Muong Thanh-brand rice from
this hamlet is a special product, which is very delicious and so famous
nationwide that all visitors to this place buy some kilos for a gift. Now,
Noong Nhai villagers know how to use machines, such as tractor-pulled
ploughs, water pumps, etc. in farming and that gives them more time to do
other handicrafts, including weaving brocade articles, plating bamboo
products and sewing blankets for tourist trading. The local tourist
industry has enormous potential and makes a worthy contribution to
changing the face of the hamlet, as well as life of the local people. More
importantly, it helps introduce to the world the unique cultural
characteristics of the Thai ethnic group in the North-western region of
Vietnam.
Noong Nhai
has been recognized as a cultural village due to its fast development.
There is no household living in poverty or hunger. All children go to
school, and the primary education universalization is being implemented.
Each family has at most two children, and they all live in unity and
provide mutual help. In addition, the hamlet has an artistic group with 30
members with a rich performing repertoire.
