Fishing Season for Anchovies in Phuoc The

 

Thanks to good weather, fishermen in Phuoc The commune, Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province has had a bumper fishing season for anchovies.

This year schools of anchovies appears in a higher density than other years. On average, each fishing boat catches 2.5-3tons of anchovies per night and there are 50-70 fishing boat at the dock every day.

On peak days, the Phuoc The fishing wharf is always busy with people from early morning to late evening. The fishermen's faces show their joy and excitement when receiving each boat filled with heavy fish baskets. Each boat can catch 120-250 baskets of anchovies, worth about 120-250 million dong (5,000 - 10,000 US dollars). These are the most fruitful days for local fishermen during this year’s fishing season in Phuoc The.

After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the bumper fishing season not only brings happiness to the fishermen, but also helps merchants and workers on the shore get more income. Le Van Dien, an employee on the Phuoc The fishing wharf said that during the anchovy season, his income increased a lot. Each person can earn 400,000 - 500,000 dong (16 - 20 US dollars) per day.

The crop of anchovies this year in Binh Thuan province and the southern fishing fields bloomed in early July with quite a high yield. Using the traditional method with lamps to lure the fish and nets to catch the fish, the anchovy productivity in Binh Thuan increases sharply compared to previous years.
